This project involved the design of a series of public awareness billboards developed in collaboration with the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians through their Tribal Historic and Cultural Preservation Department. The campaign was created to support the Tribe’s Greening Fields initiative, an outreach effort addressing environmental resilience and the impacts of urban heat islands across Los Angeles County.
The billboards were strategically placed across two regions—the Antelope Valley and the San Fernando Valley—to communicate environmental awareness through culturally grounded visual storytelling. The artwork reflects the demographic diversity of these communities while highlighting the importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Indigenous environmental stewardship.
Working closely with Tribal leadership through in-person meetings and virtual collaboration, the visual direction was developed to balance public accessibility with cultural integrity. The designs incorporate environmental imagery, human presence, and symbolic references to land stewardship, reinforcing the message that Indigenous ecological knowledge remains relevant to contemporary climate challenges.
Created entirely in Adobe Illustrator, the billboard series demonstrates the integration of large-scale public design with community collaboration. The campaign brings Indigenous environmental perspectives into highly visible public space, using visual communication as a tool for education, awareness, and environmental advocacy.
