This project involved the development of the cover artwork and visual direction for Landkeeping: Restoring Indigenous Fire Stewardship and Ecological Partnerships, published by Oregon State University Press. The project emerged from an ongoing collaborative relationship with OSU Press, who reached out based on prior successful work and a continued trust in my approach to Indigenous-centered visual communication and publication design.
The publication brings together Indigenous scholars, practitioners, cultural leaders, and environmental voices examining the role of Indigenous fire stewardship, ecological restoration, and cultural continuity across Turtle Island. In response, the cover design was developed to reflect both the urgency and relationality embedded within the subject matter—balancing contemporary editorial aesthetics with themes of land, resilience, and Indigenous authorship.
Created in close dialogue with the press and informed by the book’s interdisciplinary focus, the visual approach emphasizes atmosphere, symbolism, and environmental memory rather than literal representation. The final composition was designed to function within an academic publishing context while remaining visually grounded in Indigenous perspectives surrounding stewardship, reciprocity, and cultural responsibility to land.
This project represents an important continuation of my professional relationship with OSU Press and reflects the growing trust placed in Indigenous designers and artists to visually interpret Indigenous-authored scholarship with care, credibility, and cultural sensitivity.
