Indigenous Wellness is a self-initiated illustration series exploring wellness through interconnected themes of mind, body, spirit, culture, community, and relationship to the natural world. Rather than presenting wellness solely as an individual pursuit, the collection considers well-being through connection, balance, cultural continuity, movement, reflection, land, kinship, and community.
The series draws from more than 10 years of experience designing alongside Native communities, including Tribal Nations, Native nonprofits, therapists and behavioral health professionals, wellness practitioners, cultural educators, advocates, youth and family organizations, artists, and community-based programs. Those experiences have shaped my understanding of how wellness can be communicated through relationships between people, culture, place, identity, and contemporary Native life.
The illustrations explore different expressions of wellness—from counseling, movement, and meditation to cultural practice, hand-drum singing, intergenerational knowledge, Native plants, land, and reflection. The intention is not to define a singular Indigenous experience, but to create an expansive visual language around connection, resilience, cultural continuity, and individual and collective well-being.
Across the collection, botanical framing, controlled symmetry, simplified figures, circular and celestial motifs, and clean editorial-vector forms create a shared visual system. The color direction pairs earthy art × hyper chroma, placing grounded botanical greens, ochres, creams, clays, and natural tones against vivid fields of electric color. This contrast gives the collection a contemporary energy while allowing varied subjects to read as part of one cohesive series.
I develop the initial concepts and composite artwork in Adobe Photoshop, establishing pose, composition, cultural details, botanical elements, and visual hierarchy before rebuilding and refining selected pieces as scalable vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator. The final artwork intentionally favors simplified shapes, controlled color, and crisp graphic forms over pictorial realism.
Ultimately, Indigenous Wellness contributes to my larger goal of developing more Indigenous-authored visual resources for contemporary communication. The series is designed as an evolving library that can continue to explore wellness through culture, community, land, movement, family, resilience, and contemporary Indigenous experience—centered on connection to self, community, culture, land, and one another.
