This project involved the design of Indigenous Voices in Film, a multi-page publication produced for the Crocker Art Museum in support of an ongoing program centered on Indigenous filmmaking, authorship, and creative labor. The publication accompanies a broader institutional initiative amplifying Indigenous voices in film and media through essays, interviews, advisory perspectives, and archival content.
The publication was conceived not as a standard catalog or program guide, but as a durable editorial artifact—designed to reward slow engagement and sustained reading. Drawing from pre-digital print traditions such as album cover design, advocacy posters, and independent publishing, the visual system emphasizes repetition, texture, and material presence as tools for cultural memory and insistence. These references support the publication’s role as both contemporary document and long-term record.
The design foregrounds process and authorship through layered imagery, halftone treatments, and collage-based compositions that reference filmmaking as a constructed, collaborative practice. Visual elements depicting film equipment, production environments, and portraiture position Indigenous creatives not as subjects of study, but as active authors and agents within the cinematic landscape.
Typography plays a central conceptual role. Repeated title treatments function as a form of visual insistence, reinforcing the multiplicity of Indigenous voices while resisting monolithic or stylistic shorthand. Cultural specificity is embedded through contextual imagery—such as regional material culture—used as grounding rather than ornamentation, acknowledging lineage, place, and continuity alongside contemporary creative practice.
The final publication supports both institutional clarity and cultural responsibility, affirming Indigenous creative work as fully situated within contemporary art, film, and museum contexts.
