This project involved the creation of an original book cover illustration for Burn Scars, published by Oregon State University Press (OSU Press). The publisher commissioned the work to leverage my perspective and expertise as a Native designer while developing a visually compelling cover that could support both the intellectual depth of the book and its market presence.

The design approach focused on abstraction and conceptual expression rather than explicit cultural or tribal symbology. While the visual language may carry subtle echoes of forms and rhythms familiar within Indigenous art traditions, all artwork was an original composition developed specifically for this publication. The intent was to create a cover that felt emotionally resonant and interpretive—allowing the artwork to draw viewers into the themes and atmosphere of the book without literal illustration.

The cover was fully illustrated in Adobe Illustrator, with careful attention to foreground and background relationships, color theory, and typographic integration. Layering, contrast, and spatial balance were used to create depth and movement, ensuring the composition remained dynamic while functioning effectively within the constraints of academic publishing and retail presentation.

This project reflects my approach to book and publication design: translating complex narratives into evocative visual systems that respect content, elevate authorship, and provide publishers with original, market-ready artwork rooted in thoughtful design judgment.
